June Party is a kind of large-scale folk entertainment activity mainly popular in Tongren County, Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Huangnan, Qinghai as well as tens of villages in Jianzha, Degui, Xunhua and other counties. It is called “June Lerui” in Tibetan Language, which means song and dance contributed to dragon in June. This activity has lasted for about one thousand years. It contains rich cultural contents about religion, history, folk tradition and etc. and reflects the diligence, plainness, intelligence and bravery of the Tibetan nationality.

In the early morning, led by the sorcerer, the masses carry a “magic sedan” to visit each family in wish that the god will ensure every person safe and healthy. In the next morning, the people go to the mountain to hold flag-plugging ceremony first, then return to the temple and dance Lerui. At the end, all men are arranged in a line from the young to the old to pray with Hadas, various fruits, candies, grains, flowers, sun-moon cake and silk in their hands. A large-scale mulberry-roasting activity is held afterwards. The main sorcerer starts “magic dance” among the shouts of the people while narrating the good and bad things of the village in this year, giving the measures for handling various bad things, strictly criticizing and fining the persons who have fomented disunity and dissension or fought with others and mediating and educating those whose families are on bad terms or who are not filial to parents. Finally, all sacrifices are used to roast mulberry and all procedures end by then.

Posted by China Tour on February 6, 2008 at 12:47 pm

Taer Temple is one of the six temples of Gelu Sect in Tibetan Buddhism (also named Yellow Sect), which was originated in 1560 with land area of 400,000m2. The whole monastery matches the undulation of the mountains, with Grand Jinwa Temple, Little Flower Temple, Grand Hall, Nine-Unit Hall, Ruyi Pagoda, Gate Pagoda, totaling more than 1000 yards and more than 4500 halls, forming a building group integrating Han nationality and Tibetan nationality arts styles.

Taer Temple is a garden of religious buildings with local features of Tibetan, Han and Hui nationalities. In front of Taer Temple are eight Ruyi Pagodas built in memory of the eight events relating to the life of Sakyamuni, Founder of Buddhism.

Grand Jinwa Temple is the earliest building of Taer Temple, adopting the palace style of Han nationality with three-layer roofs of gilding tiles, with eave outlets and ridges decorated with gilding cloud heads, lotus petals, little pagodas and flame palm and with four angles installed with golden harvest beasts bearing bronze rings.

As the birthplace of Zongkaba, originator of Gelu Sect, Taer Temple has become the Holy Land of broad disciples. Gelu Sect is the mainstay of Tibetan Buddhism and forms the two derived branches of Dalai Lama and Panchen Lama, with great influence in the religious and political fields of the world.

Taer Temple has three art miracles with local unique Gansu and Qinghai features: buttered flower, fresco and embossed embroidery, reflecting the unique styles of Tibetan nationality with high art level.

Taer Temple is not only the Holy Land of Lama Sect but also one of the schools cultivating a batch of Tibetan talents, with four colleges of popular clan, closed clan, astronomy and medical science and numerous relics and literatures. Every year, four major religious meetings will be held in January, April, June and September, and two minor meetings in February and October according to the lunar calendar in Taer Temple, with tens of thousands of peoples of Tibet, Mongolia, Tu and Han nationalities attracted in praying, thus Taer Temple has become the center for Buddhist activities in the North-West of China.
